Broadcast Subject Lead, Frank Delaney has won silver at the New York Radio Awards

11 June, 2020

Frank Delaney’s radio documentary won silver in the human rights section of the New York Radio awards.

‘The Whistleblower’ tells the shocking story of Irelands largest miscarriage of Justice. Cormac Breathnach is one of Ireland finest low whistle players. Whilst he has played music in the public eye for the last three decades, throughout this time he as harboured and kept hidden a harrowing backstory. In March 1976 the Dublin to Cork mail train was robbed near Sallins in County Kildare. Two hundred thousand pounds was taken, never to be recovered. Within days, a group of men had been arrested. After being beaten and tortured by police whilst in custody they signed confessions to a crime they didn’t commit. Three were sent to jail for between 9 and 12 years. Cormac’s brother Osgur was one of the three. ‘The Whistleblower’, tells the story of how Cormac has tried to heal this family wound through the music. The documentary tracks him as he makes an album and tells his story for the first time. This documentary tells the story through shocking first-person testimony of the victims, the stories of those close to the victims, through archive footage of the time and, of course, through music.
