Advertisement for Teaching Assistants 2021-22

24 May, 2021

Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons to enable the School of Arts, English and Languages to compile a register of Teaching Assistants for academic year 2021-22. Closing date is 4pm on Wednesday 16 June 2021

Successful applicants will fully contribute to the delivery of teaching and conduct of assessment to agreed standards.

The level of support provided will be agreed in writing between the School and the individual, and will be determined by the teaching requirements of each subject area in 2021-22. Training will be provided by the School and University in September 2021 (date TBC) and attendance at this training is mandatory for all new successful applicants.

Those who have previously acted as Teaching Assistants in the School must also complete and return an application, if they wish to be considered for opportunities in the academic year 2021-22. Attendance at the training day is voluntary.

Application

If you wish to be considered for the provision of teaching and assessment support for 2021-22, you should first consult the University Policy and Guidance on Teaching and Teaching Support, available here

Please then complete the Teaching Assistant application form below.  A current CV should also be sent to a.egan@qub.ac.uk. Please put your full name in the subject line of the email.

Application Form

The closing date for receipt of applications and CVs is 4pm on Wednesday 16th June 2021.

Selection

As part of our professional obligation to current doctoral candidates, Queen’s PhD students will be given first preference. Preference will then be given to returning TAs who are current PGR students and returning Alumni. In determining suitability, the School will take into consideration, where appropriate, fulfilment of contract in the previous academic year and student module evaluations.

For shortlisting purposes, it is essential that applicants have:

  • A minimum of a 2.2 Honours degree* in a relevant discipline.
  • A PhD* (or be in the process of completing a PhD) in a relevant discipline or relevant industrial/professional/teaching experience
  • A demonstrable interest in and commitment to teaching

*or equivalent qualification acceptable to the University

It is expected that successful applicants will have excellent oral and written communication skills, and presentation skills.

Applicants currently in the first year of their PhD must pass differentiation. Applications from all PhD students must have the support of their supervisor and input will be sought as appropriate.

Notification of Results and Engagement

Applicants will be notified of the result of their application accordingly.  This will be done as soon as is practicable following the shortlist and selection stage. We will inform you as early as possible about the teaching that is likely to be available and the specific modules on offer.

Those who are not selected for teaching assistance in 2021-22 will have their application forms retained should future opportunities arise during the academic year.

The information you supply on this form will be processed in accordance with the University’s Data Protection Policy and your rights under the Data Protection Act 2018; and will be used for the purpose of providing advice only. Any queries concerning Data Protection should be sent to the Information Compliance Unit (info.compliance@qub.ac.uk)

Please note we are changing the way we engage Teaching Assistants currently paid through Non Staff Payroll, Students Union and OnCampus Jobs.  Qwork the business system, supports the operating model which allow Schools and Direcotrates to continue to engage workers locally whilst being governed centrally. More information and details on training on Qwork to follow.
