There is little to immediately alert us to the Shakespearean roots of Gus Van Sant’s quirky bromance in which River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves play two young hustlers on the streets of Portland, Oregon. But scene by scene parallels with Henry IV, Part 1 begin to emerge.

The screening will be introduced Kurt Taroff from the School of Creative Arts at Queen’s who will consider the unusual way in which the screenplay has been adapted from the Shakespeare, illustrated by some short scenes performed live from the original play.
