Olan Monk is an Irish audiovisual artist and performer, currently based in the West of Ireland and London. His live performances merge voice, technology and physicality to induce expressive audiovisual experiments/ an environmental experience of the voice as it merges with light and sound / ecstasy and dysphoria. A regular collaborator with artists as diverse as Actress, Ashley Paul and Michael Speers, Olan’s debut cassette MONK was released on Ashley Paul’s Wagtail imprint in 2015, following a video commission from The Wire magazine for the song ‘I’m in You’. MONK, a roughly collaged tape, presents a hazed-out, nihilistic deconstruction of the pop song across seven tracks. In the years following this release, Olan Monk has performed GOLD at the Barbican Centre in support of Actress with the London Contemporary Orchestra, and played alongside Thurston Moore, Mats Gustafsson and Balazs Pandi at St John Sessions, and Martin Rev (of Suicide) at Café Oto, while continuing to host the subterranean club night ‘canvas’.
