We cordially invite you to attend our #DouglassWeek2024 event series in Belfast! Join us in celebrating Frederick Douglass and other changemakers.

#DouglassWeek is an annual event series that celebrates and furthers the legacy of Frederick Douglass around the world. The week is organized by the US nonprofit The Globe Lane Initiative and includes events, exhibitions, performances, programs and projects from a wide network of local and international contributors. Each year, we provide a platform for participants to respond to the story of Douglass and other changemakers through historical, creative, academic, cultural and other lenses, reflect on contemporary issues related to his life and legacy and continue the work for freedom, equality, liberation and justice.

Our programming includes discussions, performances, exhibitions and events led by international Douglass scholars, historians and researchers, along with artists, musicians, poets, community groups and activists. 

This year, our programme includes many special contributions from staff and students from Queen’s University Belfast!

Events at QUB or with involvement from QUB staff & students include:

  • 15th of April 2024: 9.00AM-1.30PM, PRONI Belfast: Half-day Symposium: Why Remember? Tracing the Legacies of Frederick Douglass and Other Social Reformers in Northern Ireland
  • 15th of April 2024: 2.00-5.00PM, in the Courtyard Room, Riddel Hall, QUB: “Policing Black Bodies” - Panel Conversation at Queen’s University
  • 15th of April 2024: 8.45PM, QFT:  Double Feature Film Screening: Black, Northern Irish and Proud and The Rise of Hip-Hop in Northern Ireland
  • 16th of April 2024: 3.30-5.00PM, 2 Royal Ave: “Decolonizing the Curriculum” Panel Discussion and Q&A
  • 17th of April 2024: 8.30PM, QFT, Screen 2: Film Screening of Frederick Douglass: My Path to Freedom, followed by a conversation with filmmakers Keith and Paul Hoult (3rd Strike Entertainment, UK)
  • 18th of April 2024: 6.00PM, QFT: Film Screening of Glory (1989), introduced by Dr Brian Kelly (QUB)
