Politics and International Relations

A world better understood, better led and better managed

Do you want to understand the major political global challenges of our time such as climate change, civil conflict, global migration and economic inequality? Are you motivated to carry out intensive studies that can make a positive contribution to public policy?

  • UNDERGRADUATE

The academic study of politics is concerned with the sources of conflict, co-operation, power and decision-making within and between societies, how differences are expressed through ideology and organisation, and how, if at all, disagreements and problems are resolved.

With over 30 staff at the cutting edge of research and publication, the School is the largest in Ireland and one of the largest in the UK and Ireland, with specialisms in Irish and British politics, political theory, sustainable development, the politics of film and literature, gender, the Middle East, European Union politics, ethnic conflict and international relations.

Our courses put an emphasis on solving pressing public policy problems and providing robust research training. We prioritise student development of a wide range of skill sets with an aim to further employability.

Study in Belfast

The capital city of Northern Ireland is a great place to study. We can offer students unique access to the corridors of power and economic decision-making. Belfast has emerged from its troubled past as one of the most vibrant, music and culture driven locations in Europe.

"The relationships between the students and with the staff were strong and highly inclusive. The relatively small intake meant that across all three years there were plenty of opportunities to interact with other studies, and the PPE society always had great socials as well as academic events."
