Postgraduate Research Courses
Welcome
We provide excellent postgraduate research opportunities, based on the expertise of our staff and state of the art facilities. As a PhD student you will pursue specialised, ground-breaking investigations, supported by your supervisor. You will have access to local government, schools and hospitals that can facilitate your work and will benefit from the results of your research.
You will be able to apply for funding for conference attendance and international exchanges, to enrich your PhD experience and develop personal networks and collaborations with researchers in other leading universities.
Our students have access to specialised research facilities including a child-friendly development lab, eye tracking equipment, EEG lab and movement innovation lab. A full list of our research facilities can be found at the following link. Along with this you will have your own desk space within our PhD offices: https://www.qub.ac.uk/schools/psy/Research/ResearchFacilities/
Our students receive training in transferrable employability skills through the Univerity’s Graduate School, along with advanced research skills training. This enables our students to fully achieve their research and career aspirations.
Our cohesive and supportive community of more than 50 PhD students runs a peer-mentoring programme and also organises its own annual conference with invited external speakers. Our PhD students are an integral part of our seminar programme and research cluster meetings, and it is expected that new students will contribute to this research culture.
You can look forward to being supervised to the highest standards by academics who are world-class researchers. The School has around 30 staff and research is organised into five research themes:
- Development and Cognition
- Social Psychology
- Perception and Action
- Health, Welfare and Clinical Psychology
During your studies you will be supported by your supervisors, as well as our Postgraduate Research Director.
The Postgraduate Research Director is a point of contact in the School for all research students, provides general advice and pastoral care. A training programme is agreed at the start of your research to provide the necessary skills and development to successfully complete your research. Part of this will be provided through a specialised in-house training courses and part by the University’s postgraduate skills programme. Skills will be provided for both your PhD research and to enable you to achieve your career aspirations after you complete your studies.
The graduates from our research programme have an excellent employment record. They go on to obtain postdoctoral research fellowships, lectureships, research posts in government and charities, and to enter a variety of other career pathways where the skills honed through study for your PhD are a distinct advantage.
