Owenvarragh, A Belfast circus on The Star Factory was created by Úna Monaghan and Martin Dowling in 2012 from a text by Ciaran Carson and a score by John Cage. It is a realisation of the 1979 John Cage Roaratorio "circus on" score, designed to realise a text as a performance. This excerpt features a 30 channel surround soundscape of field recordings mentioned in Ciaran's book "The Star Factory", mesostic poems from the text, and Irish traditional music.
It will be performed by Úna Monaghan (harp and concertina), Martin Dowling (fiddle), Tiarnán Ó Duinnchinn (uilleann pipes), Ciara McCrickard (voice), Martha Guiney (flute), with readings from Liam Carson.
This event is part of Last Night's Fun: Ciaran Carson - A Conference and Commemoration presented by the Seamus Heaney Centre at Queen's.
This conference and commemoration celebrates the work of Ciaran Carson, esteemed poet, writer and musician, Professor and founding Director of the Seamus Heaney Centre at Queen’s, whose high standards of excellence, and high-spirited blend of local rootedness and global openness (in poet Alan Gillis’s words) he personified.
