My placement with Tetra Tech
Environmental Management student, Rhianna Van Merkom, talks about her experience of working at Tetra Tech, from geothermal road shows to ground water sampling.
I'm currently on placement with Tetra Tech, working with the Geoenvironmental team. I help with water sampling and lots of reporting. One of the key projects I've been working on is the geothermal demonstrator project in which we recently did a geothermal road show up in Derry. The road show was basically an outreach programme in which we talk to local schools and local people from around the area. We basically explained how the installation of geothermal works and the rocks underneath us in which geothermal has the highest potential.
I don't really have a typical day in work as I'm in between three different teams and getting loads of good experience. Sometimes I'm office based and then some days I'll be site based doing different work such as ground water monitoring and the geothermal demonstrator project.
When I initially started my placement with Tetra Tech I felt really nervous and like I didn't really belong but the people have been so friendly and welcoming and really helped guide me here so now I feel much more settled.
I would absolutely recommend a similar work placement to other students. It's given me invaluable knowledge and great hands-on skills.
