Award winning food science student graduates having secured prestigious postgraduate scholarship
Millie Nunn is graduating today with an undergraduate degree in Food Science and Nutrition - along with the David Timson Prize for Outstanding Commitment, as well as the highly competitive Denis Lynn Scholarship for Sustainable Food Innovation.

Millie graduates from Queen’s University Belfast having spent the past three years developing her passion for food innovation, nutrition and safety. Her final year research project—supervised by Professor Irene Grant—focused on emerging and past microbiological food safety issues within the UK dairy industry, with the aim of identifying potential future threats to public health.
Speaking about what drew her to the course, and her experience as an undergraduate student at Queen’s, Millie said:
“I chose Queens as I had seen it had such a good standing regarding food science degrees and research, and as someone with a very keen interest in nutrition and food innovation I decided to make it my first choice. My mum also went to Queens and absolutely loved it!”
“I have really enjoyed my time at Queen’s. It was definitely challenging, but I found great support from my lecturers—particularly my personal tutor Dr Anne Nugent, who supported me massively throughout all three years. I owe her a lot. Dr Susan Doherty, the programme director, was also a great help throughout—keeping the whole programme informed and cheering us on!”
In recognition of her commitment and academic excellence, Millie was awarded the David Timson Prize for Outstanding Commitment—a significant honour for a student who has demonstrated not only dedication, but has been an inspiration to others.
Now, Millie is set to continue her academic journey at Queen’s, having received the Denis Lynn Scholarship for Sustainable Food Innovation. This prestigious £20,000 bursary supports tuition fees and living expenses for students studying the MSc in Advanced Food Safety within the School of Biological Sciences. The scholarship, launched in 2023, also includes internship opportunities with Finnebrogue in County Down and another internationally renowned food producer—with the potential to secure a role at Finnebrogue upon graduation.
Reflecting on her plans, Millie said:
“I was massively honoured to receive the Denis Lynn Scholarship to continue my studies—which is my plan after graduation. I’ll be studying the Advanced Food Safety MSc at Queen’s with the hope of securing a role in new product development (NPD) in the future. Innovation and marketing have always been a keen area of interest for me!”
Millie also shared some advice for future students beginning their university journey:
“Stay on top of your assignments and get to know as many people on your course as possible—they’ll become some of your biggest supports, especially during stressful times. I’d also say, make use of the support services Queen’s offers. I didn’t until third year and really regret not doing it sooner. Most importantly—take it all in, don’t let it overwhelm you, and enjoy yourself. It goes SO quick!”
