Summer 2025

Biological Sciences graduate elected Postgraduate Education Officer after championing student voice

26 June, 2025

Nadine Curtis is graduating today with an undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences with Professional Studies - and a passion for advocacy and community.

Nadine Curtis and Natasha Matveychuk

Nadine graduates from Queen’s University Belfast following four years of academic exploration and student advocacy - which she will continue to pursue in her role of Postgraduate Education Officer.

Entering university with a broad interest in biology, Nadine used the flexibility of her course to explore a range of topics - ultimately discovering her fascination with invasive species biology during her final year project.

“Coming to university, I wasn't sure what direction I wanted to take my interests. I'm glad that this is the course I chose as it gave me so many opportunities to try different modules. So if you have a real interest in biology or in science in general, including animal and marine studies, this is a really great course to help you decide what you really enjoy.

My favourite moment has been doing my final year project on Invasive Species - how tropical fish in the trade can affect freshwater species.

It's given me an interest in fish that I never thought I would have!”

Beyond her academic work, Nadine played a pivotal role in chairing the School of Biological Sciences Student Voice Committee (SVC) - serving two years as the Undergraduate School Representative and one year as the MHLS Faculty Representative, working to ensure students’ voices were heard and acted upon.

Nadine worked closely with staff, academic societies, and the Students' Union to foster dialogue, improve learning environments, and enhance student life.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience representing those in my cohort and it has proved invaluable to my personal development.

On the day to day Course and School reps work hard to foster relationships with the Students in their school to ensure their voices are being heard, I believe we have worked hard to do this alongside our studies. I look forward to the achievements of next year's incoming reps.”

Now, Nadine will continue that advocacy in her new position as Postgraduate Education Officer - one of six full-time, Student Officer roles at Queen’s. Elected by the student body each year, these officers represent students’ interests at the highest levels of the university and lead on key issues that shape student life.

Nadine’s manifesto centres on funding issues, accessibility, and community. She is determined to improve postgraduate education, ensure mental health and academic support are accessible to all, and create more opportunities for connection and professional development across the postgraduate community.

“ Graduation isn't an ending, but a new beginning, an opportunity to apply what we've learnt, to keep growing and to face challenges with curiosity and resilience. I'm grateful to share that my next step will be serving as a Postgraduate Education Officer in the Students Union, a role that I'm excited to take on thanks to the support and encouragement of my peers and my friends.

So for those of you continuing with postgraduate studies, I want you to know that I will still be here in your corner, fighting for you along the way.”
