Celebrating Black History Month 2024

9 October, 2024

This month the School of Biological Sciences and IGFS celebrated Black History Month with an exciting Talent Exhibition and International Coffee Morning

This October, the School of Biological Sciences proudly celebrated Black History Month with a series of engaging events. Staff and students showcased their profiles in a talent exhibition, highlighting the incredible contributions of our diverse team, as you can see in the video above. The posters also created for this exhibition will be displayed on the living wall in the school’s entrance foyer, with new additions being made on an inclusive rolling basis.

The celebrations continued with an International Coffee Morning, organized by Wangui Chege and Omololu Fagunwa. The event featured traditional Ethiopian coffee and was anchored by Dr. Simms Adu. Damilare Famakinde delivered an opening speech, emphasizing the diversity of Black students and staff and their research within the school. Whitney Vale-Hagan shared interesting facts, including the sobering statistic that Black scientists make up a small fraction of the scientific workforce. Dr. Shamsudeen Dandare recounted the inspiring story of Prince Adedoyin, the first African graduate, athlete, doctor, and 1948 Olympian.

More pictures from the school's celebrations can be found here.
