Career Path and Advice
Tell us about your role and how your career has progressed?
My role combines technical support for research with the planning and delivery of fieldwork across a range of biological disciplines. I started out in a more general lab support role but gradually specialised, developing expertise in ecological & environmental field techniques, logistics, and health & safety management. Over time, I took on more responsibility, eventually leading on the coordination of field courses and supporting undergraduate and postgraduate field research.
What do you find most rewarding about your work?
One of the most rewarding aspects of my job is seeing students gain hands-on experience in the field. Fieldwork often transforms their understanding of biology, and it’s gratifying to be part of that shift—from textbook learning to real-world application. I also enjoy the variety of the work and the opportunity to work outdoors in natural environments. No two weeks are the same!
What advice do you have for an aspiring individual hoping to pursue a career in your field?
Be open to learning across disciplines, and don’t underestimate the value of practical experience. Volunteering on research projects, field courses, or conservation work can really build your skills and set you apart. Also, strong organisational and communication abilities are just as important as technical knowledge - fieldwork often involves teamwork, planning, and quick thinking.
