Ion Acceleration and Related Phenomena In Laser-Plasma Interaction

Laser plasma interaction brings new applicative opportunities in many areas. Through laser-irradiation of suitable targets, it is possible to achieve high energetic ion beams potentially leading to reduced accelerator size and cost as compared to conventional accelerators. Laser-driven ion acceleration has prospective applications in material studies, radiology, cancer therapy, as well as fusion energy. Lasers delivering high intensities in ultrashort pulses drive electrons in the irradiated material to relativistic energies and this leads to new avenues of relativistic and nonlinear plasma physics. A current aim of research on ion acceleration is to attain significantly high mono-energetic ions with good conversion efficiency by varying various plasma and laser parameters both in simulation and experiment.
