Handwashing

Why use the handwashing technique.

Hand-washing is the most important and easiest measures in preventing cross infection, if carried out correctly.

Evidence

The image to the right shows the areas of the hands that are frequently missed when hand washing. This necessitates the need for a proper hand washing technique.

Handwashing technique.

Turn on water using elbows/paper towels and adjust the temperature. Wet hands under running water and dispence soap.
Wash hands vigorously following the seven steps below

  1. Palm to palm
  2. Backs of hands fingers interlocked
  3. Palm to palm fingers interlocked
  4. Backs of fingers to opposing palms with fingers interlocked
  5. Rotational cleaning of thumbs with clasped opposit hand
  6. Rotational cleaning of finger tips to plam of opposit hand
  7. Rotational cleaning of wrists with clasped opposit hand

Rince hands well. Turn off water using elbows/paper towels. Dry hands thoroughly.
Dispose of towel in bin using foot pedal. Apply hand cream regulary.
