You are cordially invited to attend the Inaugural Professorial Lecture by Professor Kenda Crozier, a registered Nurse and Midwife with over 20 years experience in higher education and Head of the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Queen's University Belfast.

The lecture will take place on Tuesday 20 May 2025 at 17.30 in the Council Chamber, Lanyon Building, QUB, followed by a reception in the Canada Room.

The Sunday evening drama depicting midwives on bicycles paints a picture of selfless service in the pursuit of improving public health of women and families. Midwives and Nurses are regarded as highly trusted professionals in this and other portrayals of the profession in art and fiction. Yet the reports from Ockenden, Kirkup, Renfrew, and others highlight concerns about safety and care in maternity services dating back more than ten years, where system rationality prevails and the voices of women and families are not being heard. 

Professions are defined by having a set of clear skills and knowledge and a governance structure that ensures those who practise are able to fulfil the requirements. The production of new knowledge that can advance the profession is also vital for the profession to evolve. The journey of a career in nursing and midwifery explores the changes that have taken place and those still needed in professions to enable us to continue to hold public trust.
