On Tuesday 21st October 2025, Professor Pat Cullen delivered her Inaugural Professorial Lecture entitled “From Ward to Westminster: A Journey of Care, Courage and Change” in the Canada Room, Lanyon Building, Queen’s University Belfast. Professor Cullen, Honorary Professor of Practice in the School of Nursing and Midwifery, reflected on her journey from mental health nursing in Belfast to her leadership as Chief Executive and General Secretary of the Royal College of Nursing, and most recently to her election as Sinn Féin MP for Fermanagh and South Tyrone.
In her address, Professor Cullen explored the powerful connections between nursing and politics, describing how the principles of care, compassion, and integrity underpin both professions. Drawing on her extensive experience, she spoke about the courage required to lead through adversity—from challenging institutional practices early in her career, to guiding the nursing profession through the first national strike in its 106-year history. Professor Cullen emphasised that nurses and midwives bring essential leadership qualities—authenticity, empathy, and moral courage—that are crucial not only in healthcare but also in shaping political decision-making. She urged for more nurses and clinicians to take active roles in influencing policy, stating that “politics would be all the richer if we had more nurses at the centre of decision-making.”
Reflecting on the current challenges facing health and social care in Northern Ireland, she highlighted the urgent need for transformation, investment in the workforce, and the restoration of public confidence. Professor Cullen concluded by reaffirming her belief that leadership—whether in nursing or politics—must always be grounded in integrity, compassion, and service to others. The lecture provided a compelling and inspiring perspective on how the values of nursing can transform political and public life.
