The inclusion of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/questioning-plus (LGBTQ+) health needs and concerns within nursing and midwifery pre-registration programmes

LGBTQ+ people experience a range of physical and psychosocial issues and concerns, with important contributions required from nurses and midwives. Despite the health concerns, the inclusion in nursing and midwifery pre-registration programmes appears limited. It is anticipated that the study will ultimately impact on the health and well-being of LGBTQ+ people thereby contributing to improving their health and well-being, their wider social inclusion and advancing their human rights.

Details of any grant/funding connected with the research

Funded by Burdett Trust for Nursing.

What is your ideal Research outcome?

The outcome of the study is to produce an education Best Practice Guide to inform future LGBTQ+ content, delivery and assessment within pre-registration programmes, thereby improving nursing and midwifery practice for the future.

Principal Investigators: Professor Michael Brown, Queen’s University Belfast and Dr Edward McCann, Trinity College Dublin.

Why did you choose your current post and why at Queen’s?

Initially when I applied to Queen’s it was an opportunity to contribute to research and utilise and develop the skills and knowledge I had acquired in a previous project at another University. My current post was an opportunity to continue working at Queen’s.

How have you been supported at Queen’s?

I have attended training courses which have been a valuable support. The Postdoc forum is an excellent source of support.

In what ways have you developed at Queen’s?

My insight and understanding of the research process have been developed in each of the projects I have worked on. This has been through working with those on my team and sharing of experiences.

Can you describe the postdoctoral community in the School and at Queen’s?

Very supportive especially when we were all on Level 7 together.

Where do you hope your current post will lead?

As a contract researcher I am hoping another project will become available to enable me to continue working at Queen’s.

Anything else you would like to add or advice to new Postdocs?

I am enjoying the work I am doing and am so appreciative of the support and guidance from my team members. My advice to new Postdocs – be curious and do not hesitate to ask questions.
