Despite progress, the use of Family planning (FP) in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) is insufficient and there is an urgent need to understand how to accelerate its use and impact. Involving men and boys in FP is now recognised as essential, with interventions that attend to gender inequalities showing particular promise. Our recent World Health Organisation (WHO) review revealed, however, that there are few systematic reviews in this area and a lack of clarity regarding the characteristics of successful interventions and their potential for use in different contexts. Using Causal Chain Analysis (CCA), this systematic review will synthesise current evidence on effectiveness and implementation of these complex FP interventions and examine intervention components, systems and processes to uncover their critical characteristics and dynamics, enabling better understanding of the suitability of existing interventions for adaptation and scale-up. Although the findings will have global applications, we will engage stakeholders from nine LMICs to develop recommendations for FP policy and practice and maximise dissemination, uptake and impact of the findings.
