Postgraduate Scholarships and Award

The School of Nursing and Midwifery is pleased to offer a number of scholarships and awards for students undertaking Postgraduate study.
The Burdett Trust MSc Nursing Scholarships
The Burdett Trust for Nursing is an independent charitable trust named after Sir Henry Burdett KCB, the founder of the Royal National Pension Fund for Nurses (RNPFN). The Trust was set up in 2002 in recognition of the foundation, philosophy and structure of the RNPFN. The Trust makes grants in support of nurse-led projects, using its funds to empower nurses and make significant improvements to the patient care environment.
The Burdett Trust will support 2 annual scholarships (one home student and one international student) for registered nurses to undertake the MSc Advanced Professional Practice* (the name of this MSc may change but content and delivery will remain the same).
The Burdett Trust Home Scholarship will support one registered nurse, who meets residency criteria for NI Home tuition fees to undertake the MSc in Advanced Professional Practice* (*Name of MSc may change). The award will cover the full tuition fees plus a stipend to the student. Given that the award covers 5 years, tuition fees will be agreed each year, however an indicative instalment schedule is detailed below:
Year 1 (2025/26) Tuition fees £ 7,300 Stipend £ 10,250
Year 2 (2026/27) Tuition fees £7,665 Stipend £ 10,250
Year 3 (2027/28) Tuition fees £8,048 Stipend £ 10,250
Year 4 (2028/29) Tuition fees £8,450 Stipend £ 10,250
Year 5 (2029/30) Tuition fees £8,872 Stipend £ 10,250
The Burdett Trust International Scholarship will support one registered nurse (who meets residency criteria for international fees) to undertake the MSc in Advanced Professional Practice. The award will cover the full international student tuition fees, plus a stipend to each student. Given that the award covers 5 years, tuition fees will be agreed each year, however an indicative instalment schedule is detailed below:
Year 1 (2025/26) Tuition fees £ 21,500 Stipend £ 17,000
Year 2 (2026/27) Tuition fees £24,295 Stipend £ 17,000
Year 3 (2027/28) Tuition fees£27,453 Stipend £ 17,000
Year 4 (2028/29) Tuition fees £31,022 Stipend £ 17,000
Year 5 (2029/30) Tuition fees £35,053 Stipend £ 17,000
The successful student will fulfil criteria as set out below:
- All candidates who have accepted a place and intend to register for the MSc programme in the relevant academic year are eligible to apply for the Award.
- Applicants must be a permanent resident in Northern Ireland
- Applicants must be a registered nurse
- Candidates must have at least a 2:2 or equivalent. Applicants whose first language is not English are normally required to have an IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent.
The final decision will be based on the record of academic achievement and conditions outlined in criteria above and a supporting written statement and interview.
The written statement should be not more than 500 words and detail: “Why would you like to be considered for this prestigious scholarship and how will it enhance your career in nursing?"
Email application will be sent to all accepted students onto the programme with a two-week deadline to return the application forms.
Following interview, an offer will be made to the highest ranked applicant in the first instance and in order of ranking thereafter should the scholarship be turned down.

THE PATRICIA NAPIER SCHOLARSHIPS
The scholarships were set up in 2011 by Mr. Russell Napier in recognition of his mother, Patricia Napier. The scholarship will cover Home tuition fees for students wishing to undertake one of the following Postgraduate Taught programmes:
- Masters in Advanced Professional Practice
- PG Diploma Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy
- Masters in Caring for Children and Young People with Complex Health Care Needs
Applicants should provide a written statement of not more than 500 words to explain the contribution of PGT study in improving clinical practice and professional competence. Separately, candidates must also apply and be accepted for the relevant programme to start in September 2025.
The decision will be based on the record of academic achievement and the supporting written statement. Candidates may be asked to attend an interview to discuss their application as part of the selection process.
