Welcome to The School Of History, Anthropology, Philosophy and Politics

We are one of the largest and most wide-ranging schools in the university, exploring culture and society from the origins of humanity and ancient history to modern day politics. 

Through our research and teaching, the School of History, Anthropology, Philosophy and Politics aims to help our wider society understand the world around us.  Alongside over 90 academic staff specialising in a wide range of fields, we are home to a large community of undergraduate and postgraduate students. We have an international reputation for excellence and we strive to develop ground-breaking research and deliver innovative teaching. You’ll find more information about the school, our people and our activities in these pages.

Bringing together strong expertise in Conflict and Peacebuilding, Cognitive Anthropology, Irish Studies and Ethnomusicology. 

Philosophy

The central aim of philosophy is to understand the world and humanity's place in it, pursuing questions that have been of perennial interest to everyone. 

Politics and International Relations

Approaches ranging from political theory, political economy, conflict studies, and comparative government to the history of international institutions and foreign policy analysis.

Centre for Creative Ethnography
The Centre for Creative Ethnography (CFCE), established by anthropologists and ethnomusicologists at the School of History, Anthropology, Philosophy and Politics in June 2023, seeks to explore creative practices around the world, investigate creative dimensions of ethnographic work, and contribute to theoretical debates about creativity and improvisation.

Research Institutes 

The Institute of Irish Studies and the Senator George J. Mitchell Institute for Global Peace, Security and Justice are both interdisciplinary research institutes that sit outside the School, but many HAPP colleagues are leaders and fellows of these Institutes, enabling valuable and sustained engagement.
