2024 SSESW Athena SWAN Annual Lecture
Talat Yaqoob FRSE discussed what intersectionality looks like in research practice and decision‑making.
Delivered by Talat Yaqoob FRSE, an independent consultant, social researcher, and award-winning campaigner, and supported by colleagues and students from SSESW, the Annual Lecture provided an opportunity to engage collectively in issues relating to gender equality and intersectionality.
Whilst the term intersectionality is being utilised more within the research and social policy landscape, it is still often dismissed, diluted or demonised. The lecture provided an opportunity to discuss and consider how we can use intersectional approaches to pursue research and decision-making that can deliver a fairer society for those most marginalised as a consequence on systemic injustice.
Lectures were also delivered by fellow Queen's lecturers, Dr S McAlister: "Understandings & experiences of violence among young NI women", and Dr. Sultan Turkan: "Understanding cultural and linguistic diversity in workplaces".
Posters were also presented by SSESW PhD students on the day.
This is not a full recording of the event but a highlights reel of all three lectures that took place on 12th March 2024.
