LGBTQIA+ Awareness Training
As part of its ongoing Athena SWAN Action Plan, the School recently welcomed staff to a diversity training session delivered by Cara-Friend, focusing on LGBTQIA+ inclusion in the classroom.
The session, led by Jo McParland, Business Engagement and Training Manager at Cara-Friend, explored key terminology, the importance of pronouns, and practical steps educators can take to create welcoming and respectful learning environments for LGBTQIA+ students. Topics included understanding gender identity and expression, recognising outdated or harmful language, being mindful of unconscious bias, and developing confident allyship.
Designed to support both new and experienced educators, the session offered an opportunity to refresh inclusive teaching strategies and stay informed about current issues affecting LGBTQIA+ young people. Staff were encouraged to reflect on classroom practices, consider how language and assumptions impact students, and adopt approaches that promote safety, visibility and respect.
The session offered staff the tools to strengthen inclusive practice across teaching teams.
