All about Jordan's current role:
There are no two days the same within my role- which I think is what makes working within the Environment sector so exciting! A large part of my role involves working with businesses across Northern Ireland and advising them on how they can act more responsibly in terms of their environmental impact. Some days this may be speaking at an event about a particular subject matter, carrying out an audit of their biodiversity policies in the organisation, or providing training and workshops to guide them through carbon measurement and implementing an environmental strategy. I really enjoy having the opportunity to work with passionate individuals and innovative organisations and giving them the knowledge and confidence to be a force for good through their business.
All about Jordan's time at Queen's:
While at university, I always intended to work in consultancy or advisory as I really liked the idea of working with businesses and driving positive change. My placement was however in a more technical energy management role, which I stayed on to work in during my final year and for a period after.
While this may not have been the industry I had envisioned working within initially, the experience was fantastic and I got to play a key role in managing how a large and complex organisation manages their environmental and energy practises. This role was therefore a fantastic stepping stone into advisory and gave me the knowledge and expertise to support other organisations in these areas.
I strongly advise completing a one-year placement in industry as the experience is invaluable. You will leave your placement with a better idea of what career you might want to follow and it’s a great opportunity to kickstart your professional network. I would also encourage you to get involved with the numerous opportunities that QUB offer to students to enhance you CV and your student experience. I undertook a study abroad experience in Australia through Queen’s and it was incredible, giving me the opportunity to travel while I studied.
