Girls in Maths and Physics

“Girls in Maths and Physics” aims to inspire young female and gender minority mathematicians and physicists to consider a career in these areas and is sponsored by the School’s Gender Equality and Outreach committees.

The 2024 took place on 19th June and welcomed girls from across Northern Ireland to explore various aspects of Maths and Physics.

During the day, the schoolgirls took part in a panel discussion with a range of our current and former students, quizzing them on why they decided to study these subjects at university and about how they use the skills obtained in their current jobs. In addition, the students took part in a range of interactive activities throughout the day, ranging from estimating the age of the universe with observational data to making use of knot theory in practical applications, that highlight the world-leading research carried out within the School.

Dr Meg Schwamb, IOP Juno Champion for the School of Maths and Physics, said “It was great to see so many young faces at the event today, getting a real buzz out of all the activities taking place. Being able to see the cutting-edge research taking place in Queen’s and being able to talk to the students and staff who carry this out will hopefully inspire them to pursue these subjects further”.

Dr Daniel Dundas, Athena Swan Champion for the School of Maths and Physics, said “STEM subjects have traditionally been male-dominated and this still leads to an under-representation of women and gender minority in these areas. Events like this will hopefully help to redress this imbalance by allowing those taking part to see the successful career paths our former students have taken and allow then to see that this is something they can do as well”.

Any queries regarding registration should be emailed to the Outreach team at mp.outreach@qub.ac.uk

Girls in Maths and Physics is sponsored by Queen's School of Mathematics and Physics and the Athena SWAN Initiative.
