Queen’s University Professor appointed to new UK national mathematical sciences academy fellowship

3 February, 2026

Professor Adele Marshall from the School of Mathematics and Physics at Queen’s has been appointed as a Fellow of the UK Academy for the Mathematical Sciences.

The Academy is a new UK national body, which has been established to place mathematics at the heart of UK policy making, economic resilience and future technologies.

Professor Marshall has been given the honour specifically for her commitment to applying mathematics for societal benefit, driven by a passion for embedding excellent work in healthcare provision to benefit the UK population.

A total of 100 Fellows have been selected from around five million mathematicians right across the UK.

The National Academy for Mathematics Sciences was founded in 2025 to strengthen links between academia, government and industry and tackle some of the UK’s biggest challenges.

The Academy brings together all UK mathematical societies, including the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA), the Royal Statistical Society (RSS) and the Operational Research Society (ORS).

The Fellowship is the Academy’s most prestigious honour and aims to put maths at the heart of national life and policy making.

Much like Fellows of the other National Academies, the Fellows of the Academy for the Mathematical Sciences have been recognised for being leaders in their fields, through fundamental discoveries, exceptional work in education, or driving the application of mathematics across society as part of our critical national infrastructure.

Speaking about the announcement of her fellowship, Professor Marshall commented: "I am honoured and delighted to be announced as a Fellow. I am excited to contribute more research and to leave a meaningful mark for the future – I hope that this will enable an even greater reach and impact for my work.”

Professor Dame Alison Etheridge DBE FRS, the President of the Academy for the Mathematical Sciences, said: “I’m delighted to welcome our inaugural Fellows – individuals of exceptional distinction who collectively advance the mathematical sciences through discovery, leadership, education and real-world application.

“As Fellows of the Academy, they will come together in service of the wider public good: bringing independent expertise to bear on national priorities, championing excellence in mathematics education, strengthening the UK’s research and innovation base, and helping to ensure that mathematics continues to deliver opportunity, resilience and prosperity across our four nations.”
