Research Showcase

30 October, 2016

The School of Nursing and Midwifery Research Showcase took place on Wednesday 21 September 2016 at the Canada Room in the Lanyon Building at Queen’s University Belfast. The aim of this event was to showcase and disseminate the excellent research which is carried out in the School and especially that of our postgraduate students, post-doctoral fellows and members of staff undertaking doctorates.  The presentations and posters showcased at the event focused on the two key areas, Supportive & Palliative Care and Maternal and Child Health.

Professor Maria Lohan, the Acting Director of Research at the School, welcomed everyone and thanked the organisers of the event Dr Olinda Santin (Post-doctoral co-coordinator), Dr Joanne Reid (Postgraduate Tutor) and Emily Moffat (Postgraduate student rep). She introduced the event by outlining the key research areas in the School of Nursing and Midwifery, and emphasised the crucial role of research in education and nursing practice and how this is being promoted by the School. The event was officially opened by the University’s President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Patrick Johnston and the Deputy Chief Nursing Officer, Caroline Lee.

Professor Johnston praised the cutting-edge life-saving research which takes place at the School. In his own words ‘From Maternal and Child Health, to Supportive and Palliative Care, your research is changing and improving care for people at every stage of life – from their first breath, to their last.’

He also referred to the School’s performance at the last REF exercise where 100 percent of its research was judged to be internationally excellent or world class. Caroline Lee emphasised the dynamic ways in which the health service is changing and the importance of drawing on research underway at universities to enhance effective and compassionate nursing care.

The Head of School, Professor Donna Fitzsimmons completed the opening of the event and also concluded the proceedings by giving out the prizes for outstanding current doctoral student, best oral presentation and best poster contributions as follows:

Laurence Leonard: Best Oral Presentation prize for his paper “Undergraduate Nursing Students’ Responses to their Emotional Experiences in Clinical Practice”

Conall O’Rourke: Best Poster prize for his poster “Traumatic Brain Injury and Its Co-Occurrences in Prison Populations: A Systematic Review”

Matthew Carson: Outstanding Current Doctoral Student award

A bouquet of flowers was also presented to one of our Doctoral Students in the School, Liz Bannon, who was recently awarded an OBE in recognition of her services to midwifery in Northern Ireland.
