School of Pharmacy Hosts Harvard's Professor Samir Mitragotri for Hamilton Gold Medal Lecture
The School of Pharmacy recently welcomed Professor Samir Mitragotri from Harvard University to deliver the latest instalment of the Hamilton Gold Medal Lecture Series, entitled "Drugs and their Delivery: Implications for Patients and Healthcare Cost"
Professor Mitragotri is the Hiller Professor of Bioengineering and Wyss Professor of Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard, and is one of the world's leading authorities on drug delivery. His research has led to new technologies for delivering small molecules, proteins, nucleic acids, and cells across multiple biological barriers, introducing innovations including low-frequency ultrasound, liquid microjets, ionic liquids, red blood cell hitchhikers, and cellular backpacks. His work has given rise to over a dozen biotechnology companies that have advanced his technologies into clinical application.
Professor Mitragotri is an elected member of the US National Academy of Engineering, the US National Academy of Medicine, the US National Academy of Inventors, and the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. He is also an elected member of the World Academy of Sciences, and a fellow of AAAS, CRS, BMES, AIMBE, and AAPS. He received his BS in Chemical Engineering from the Institute of Chemical Technology, India, and his PhD in Chemical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The Hamilton Lecture Series was established in 2017 in memory of Aileen Hamilton, a former member of staff in the School. The series aims to foster research culture and communication within the School, and has become an important fixture in the School's academic calendar.
Speaking after the lecture, Professor Gavin Andrews, Head of the School of Pharmacy, said:
"It was a privilege to welcome Professor Mitragotri to our School for this year's Hamilton Gold Medal Lecture. His pioneering work in drug delivery sits at the very forefront of pharmaceutical innovation, and his lecture provided a truly inspiring insight into how new technologies can improve patient outcomes while addressing the growing challenge of healthcare costs. The Hamilton Gold Medal Lecture Series continues to bring world-leading researchers to our School, and events like these play a vital role in fostering a vibrant research culture and inspiring the next generation of pharmaceutical scientists."
