MPharm Student Wins First Place at PGJCCR Summer Studentship Poster Symposium
Liam Fitzpatrick, a current MPharm student at the School, took first place at the PGJCCR Summer Studentship Poster Symposium for his research project "Elucidating the role of sialic acid-Siglec interactions in NK cell mediated anti-tumour responses."

Liam's award-winning research was conducted as part of a summer research studentship funded through the Queen's Crucible program for interdisciplinary research. The project represents a collaborative effort between the School of Pharmacy, School of Chemistry, and School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences, led by Dr Emma McErlean, Dr Seyed Tabaei, and Dr Stephanie Craig.
Speaking about his experience, Liam said:
"My experience working in Dr McErlean's lab has been incredibly rewarding, allowing me to strengthen my laboratory techniques, research capabilities and scientific communication skills. This studentship has been a pivotal experience in my development as a researcher and as a person, and I'm excited for what lies ahead."
Dr McErlean added:
"It has been a pleasure to host Liam in our lab this summer, and as his supervisor I am very proud that his hard work has been recognised with this award. Summer research studentships are an extremely valuable experience which allow students to explore the potential for a career in research. It is an honour to host students in my lab and hopefully inspire the next generation of researchers!"
Professor Gavin Andrews, Head of the School of Pharmacy at Queen's, has congratulated Liam on his award, stating:
"I am delighted to congratulate Liam Fitzpatrick on his first-place award at the PGJCCR Summer Studentship Poster Symposium. This achievement reflects both Liam's exceptional dedication and the strength of our collaborative research environment. The Queen's Crucible program exemplifies our commitment to interdisciplinary innovation, and Liam's success demonstrates the transformative impact of undergraduate research experiences in developing future leaders in pharmaceutical sciences."
This recognition highlights the School's commitment to providing students with opportunities to engage in cutting-edge research and develop as future leaders in healthcare and pharmaceutical sciences.
