Professor Stefano Baschiera

School of Arts, English and Languages

Professor Stefano Baschiera’s research focuses on cinematic spaces and the industrial practices of production, distribution, and circulation within European cinema. His work explores the representation of urban and domestic space, transnational modes of film production and co-production, and the impact of streaming distribution and gatekeeping on film circulation. He has published widely on Italian cinema, European horror and genre traditions, and crime cinema, with a particular emphasis on transnational and transcultural perspectives.

Alongside his work on film industries and genres, he has a sustained interest in screenwriting as both a creative practice and a form of practice-as-research, supervising doctoral projects in the field and contributing to debates on screenwriting pedagogy. His broader research also engages with film theory, especially in relation to transnational new waves, and with questions of diversity, sustainability, and circulation in the European screen industries.
