Passionate Leadership for Sustainable Development Graduate celebrates her transformative year
Jyothsna Nambala is graduating today with a postgraduate degree in Leadership for Sustainable Development, having overcome homesickness and loneliness following her move abroad to Belfast.
Jyothsna graduates from Queen’s University Belfast following a transformative year that reshaped her confidence and strengthened her commitment to sustainability.
Initially, Jyothsna found moving abroad to Belfast difficult. She faced loneliness, challenges, and self-doubt, but over time, resilience, new friendships, and a supportive school community helped her grow and feel truly at home at Queen’s.
As she recalls:
“When I came to Belfast, everything felt completely new and overwhelming — I was nervous, alone, and unsure how to begin my journey. I often struggled with loneliness while living far from university, which made attending classes even harder. Slowly, I learned to adapt, push through challenges, and find strength within myself. This journey has made me stronger, and I truly believe I am on my way to shining.”
Jyothsna’s interest in sustainability and social impact is what initially drew her to Queen’s.
“Queen’s attracted me because of its practical, placement-based learning and its strong focus on sustainability. I always wanted a career that aligned with purpose and community development, and this programme felt like the right path for me.”
During her studies, Jyothsna undertook a placement with Oxfam, completing her final research project on Consumer Awareness of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR).
“I chose this topic because EPR is essential for promoting corporate accountability and reducing waste. Increasing public awareness helps move society towards more circular and sustainable systems, making this research meaningful and impactful.”
Reflecting on her journey, Jyothsna highlights how much she grew to love her experience at Queen’s:
“My experience has been incredibly rewarding and transformative. One of my proudest moments was being elected as the Course Representative, which gave me the chance to support my peers and contribute positively to the programme. Collaborating with people from diverse backgrounds helped me gain new perspectives and improved my confidence as a future sustainability professional.
Another memorable highlight was how supportive the learning environment at Queen’s has been. Whether it was placements, presentations, or group activities, I always felt encouraged to grow and challenge myself, which made my experience truly special.”
Now preparing for life after university, Jyothsna is focusing on roles in corporate sustainability and ESG, as she aims to create meaningful environmental and social change.
Her parting advice for current students?
“Be confident, ask questions, and embrace every opportunity. It’s okay to feel nervous — growth happens outside your comfort zone.”
