Research Interests
Professor Taggart’s research is at the forefront of efforts to tackle health inequities faced by individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. His work spans the design, evaluation, and implementation of interventions in complex health and social care systems, with a strong translational focus aimed at improving outcomes for children and adults with developmental conditions.
Professor Taggart’s research interests also focus on how we can implement research into clinical practice using Implementation Science Theories, Models and Frameworks. Professor Taggart has an interest in Implementation Methodologies and how these are embedded within Randomised Clinical Trials designs.

Public outreach & key achievements
Over the course of his career, Professor Taggart has secured more than £20 million in competitive research funding from major UK bodies, including the NIHR, ESRC, MRC, Northern Ireland RDO, and Diabetes UK. He is the author of more than 200 high-impact, peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, and is widely regarded as a leader in his field.
He has served in senior advisory roles with prestigious organisations such as the Royal College of Nursing, the Royal Society of Medicine, and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), where he contributed expert guidance on the care of older adults with intellectual disabilities. He is currently a member of the Executive Committee of the International Association for the Scientific Study of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IASSIDD), where he also serves as the Liaison Officer to the World Health Organization.
