Endoscopy Nursing
This Postgraduate Certificate equips nurses with the specialist knowledge and practical capability required to deliver safe, person-centred care across gastrointestinal, respiratory and urological endoscopy.

It explores the full patient journey, including assessment, preparation, monitoring, risk management, decontamination, communication and recovery, alongside an understanding of relevant physiology and pathophysiology. Students develop confidence in both technical and non-technical skills, including effective teamwork, patient counselling, and managing complications or emergencies. It is ideal for nurses working in endoscopy services who want to advance clinical competence, leadership and the ability to support high-quality diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

Course Content
This Postgraduate Certificate comprises one 40 credit module and one 20 credit module:
Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Nursing [40 CATS] (Semester 1 and 2)
In this double module, students will;
- Develop skills in assessment, planning, implementation, & evaluation of patients’ needs; work collaboratively with patient, carers & multidisciplinary team;
- Develop competency in clinical endoscopic skills to assist in delivery of safe & effective care;
- Demonstrate interpersonal skills, appraisal & evaluation.
- Person-Centred Practice: Delivery of inclusive, compassionate and evidence-based care that prioritises patient safety and well-being in an endoscopy setting.
- Leadership and Professional Development: Competence in supervision, risk management and leading multi-professional teams in emergency and complex situations; application of innovation, change management and awareness of human factors in endoscopy.
Respiratory and Urological Endoscopy Nursing (Semester 2)
In this module, students will;
Critically discuss & appraise the current global disease patterns relevant to respiratory & urological endoscopy.
Critically evaluate the clinical effectiveness of pharmaceutical agents utilised for conscious sedation and anaesthesia from systematic reviews, clinical trials and literature.
Develop comprehensive counselling, health promotion and health education strategies, appreciating the importance of effective communication.
Critically evaluate the role of the nurse in risk management and management of complications for the sedated/anaesthetised patient. Debate professional, ethical and legal issues.

Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will graduate with a Post Graduate Certificate (PG Cert) in Advanced HealthCare Practice (Endoscopy).

Delivery
Students should note that delivery may be via blended learning, with a mix of online and face to face classes as detailed within the module timetable on Canvas.
Autumn (AUT) teaching commences w/c Monday, 21 September 2026 (Week 1) and finishes w/c Monday, 14 December 2026 unless otherwise advised.
Spring (SPR) teaching commences w/c Monday, 18 January 2027 (Week 18) and finishes w/c Monday, 27 April 2027 unless otherwise advised.

Selection Criteria
Applicants shall normally hold a relevant 2.2 Honours degree or above, or an equivalent qualification acceptable to the University.
Applicants who do not hold a 2.2 Honours degree (or equivalent qualification acceptable to the University) may be considered on a case-by-case basis where they can demonstrate evidence of successful study at Level 6 in a healthcare related subject.
Applicants must provide evidence of at least 20 CAT points at Level 3/6. Certificates must clearly state level of study and credit worthiness in order to meet the entry requirements.
In addition, applicants accessing postgraduate certificates must be working in the relevant clinical area.
International Trained Nurses/Midwives: If you hold an international qualification you will need to provide a UK ENIC Statement of Comparability.
