Planetary Health

This Postgraduate Certificate combines two complementary areas: global and local health inequality, and the relationship between healthcare systems, sustainability and planetary health.

Duration1 academic year
DeliveryBlended
Fees fromNo Fee
Start dateTo be confirmed

Students critically explore how social, political, economic and environmental determinants shape health outcomes, and develop evidence-informed strategies to reduce inequities in practice. Alongside this, they examine the environmental impact of healthcare, low-carbon approaches to care delivery, and leadership for sustainable transformation across health systems. It is ideal for nurses who want to strengthen advocacy, lead service improvement and contribute to more equitable, resilient and sustainable models of care.

For provisional timetables, please refer to the section below titled Delivery.

The Programme

  • Course Content

This Postgraduate Certificate comprises three 20 credit modules:

Sustainable Healthcare and Planetary Health (Semester 1) – This module enables students to critically evaluate the interdependence of healthcare systems and planetary health. It develops advanced understanding of sustainability principles, equips students to design and evaluate low-carbon and equitable healthcare strategies, and fosters leadership for systemic transformation within health organisations.

Students will address the following themes:

    • Foundations of Sustainable Healthcare: Core principles, planetary health frameworks, and global policy drivers.
    • Environmental Determinants and Health Equity: Climate change, pollution, biodiversity loss, and their impacts on population health and social justice.
    • Sustainable Practice and Innovation: Development and evaluation of resource-efficient clinical, and organisational approaches.
    • Ethics, Leadership, and Change: Ethical decision-making, governance, and leadership for sustainable transformation in healthcare.
    • Reflective and Transformative Practice: Integration of sustainability principles into professional identity, practice, and systems thinking.

Health Inequalities: Application of Global Perspectives in Practice (Semester 2) - The aim of this module is to provide students with the opportunity to critically explore the concepts of health inequality and inequity within both UK and global health contexts. Students will examine the social, political, economic, and environmental factors that shape health outcomes globally and gain an understanding of how these concepts are applied within nursing practice. This module will introduce theoretical frameworks and leadership models to support students in developing evidence-informed strategies for reducing health inequalities. Students will analyse evidence from national and international sources of public health research to evaluate innovative nursing/policy interventions that promote equitable care delivery, integrate global perspectives, and demonstrate advocacy for vulnerable populations.

HSN7076 – Evidence Based Practice - This course takes a lifespan approach, considering the health evidence and service provision requirements of people with intellectual disabilities from early age to the end of life stage. Upon completion of this course, applicants will have an advanced understanding of neurodiversity, physical health needs, transitions, behaviour, trauma-informed care, mental health, forensics and offending behaviour and dementia and end of life considerations. This course will challenge applicants to consider how best practice evidence is delivered, considering systems and health promotion theory, leadership styles, interprofessional working and quality improvement.

  • Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will graduate with a Post Graduate Certificate (PG Cert) in Advanced HealthCare Practice (Planetary Health).
