Stand Alone Module | Nursing

Advances in Health Evidence and Intellectual Disabilities

LEVEL OF STUDY : 7 - postgraduate level

Modules code: HSN7081

The population of children, adults and older people with intellectual disabilities is changing and growing with more living into older age with a range of complex care and support needs.  This 20 credit module will explore advances in health evidence for people with intellectual disabilities and consider the implications for service delivery and practice.

Stand Alone modules give the applicant an opportunity to:

  • Return to study
  • Update in a new field of practice
  • Further develop knowledge and skills in the current area of practice

On successful completion of the module the participant will be awarded CATs points, which may count towards another award. Students may access a number of Stand Alone modules offered within a variety of nursing programmes. The modules may stipulate that participants must be working in a relevant clinical environment. 

Please note that courses are subject to a minimum registration, so it may not be possible to run all courses each year.

Entry Requirements

Candidates must normally hold a professional qualification. Note: some modules require a specific professional qualification. See Selection Criteria for full requirements.

The Programme

  • Course Content

    The module takes a lifespan approach, considering prominent health issues that affect the person with intellectual disability from birth to the end-of-life stage. These include, but are not limited to, causes of intellectual disability, common health concerns, neurodiversity and neurodevelopmental factors, health inequalities, health promotion, transitions, behaviour, trauma-informed care, mental ill-health, forensics and offending behaviour, dementia, palliative care and end of life considerations.

    The module links up to date health evidence with a range of relevant theories, including behaviour change theories, systems change theories and implementation science.  The module will draw on knowledge from the concepts of person centred care, equity and health inequalities, social inclusion and social justice and will reflect on key legislation and policy specific to the individual with intellectual disabilities across the lifespan.

  • Outcomes
    On completion of this module students will be able to:
    • Critically review and appraise research-based and other evidence sources about co-morbidities and health needs of children, adults and older people with intellectual disabilities
    • Work in partnership with people with intellectual disabilities and complex health needs and their family and carers to develop and implement evidence-informed person-centred care plans.
    • Critically evaluate outcomes of health interventions to manage complex health conditions and sustain the well-being of children, adults and older people with intellectual disabilities.
  • Delivery

    Students should note that delivery may be via blended learning, with a mix of online and face to face classes as detailed within the module timetable on Canvas.

    Autumn (AUT) teaching commences w/c Monday, 15 September 2025 (Week 1) and finishes w/c 1 December 2025 unless otherwise advised.

    Venue for first class listed below - thereafter, students should check the Weekly Planner facility on QSIS for remaining venues.

  • Selection Criteria

    Applicants must hold at least a degree for entry to Level 7 (postgraduate level) study. Applicants who do not meet the entry requirements should contact the School for advice.

    International Trained Nurses/Midwives: If you hold an international qualification you will need to provide a UK ENIC Statement of Comparability. This should be obtained prior to submitting your application. You can apply for a statement through the ENIC website:  Statement of Comparability (enic.org.uk)    

    Students accessing this stand alone module must work in the relevant clinical area.

    Please note that these courses are not open to international applicants living outside the UK/ROI.
