Stand Alone Module | Nursing

Contemporary Care Delivery in Intellectual Disability Practice

LEVEL OF STUDY : 7 - postgraduate level

Modules code: HSN7082

As the population of people with intellectual disabilities continues to change and grow so to do their needs and the needs of the families who support them. This 20 credit module will focus on the contemporary care needs of children, young people, adults and older adults living with intellectual disabilities. It will explore care delivery as it changes and adapts to meet the evolving and increasingly diverse needs of this population.

Stand Alone modules give the applicant an opportunity to:

  • Return to study
  • Update in a new field of practice
  • Further develop knowledge and skills in the current area of practice

On successful completion of the module the participant will be awarded CATs points, which may count towards another award. Students may access a number of Stand Alone modules offered within a variety of nursing programmes. The modules may stipulate that participants must be working in a relevant clinical environment. 

Please note that courses are subject to a minimum registration, so it may not be possible to run all courses each year.

Entry Requirements

Candidates must normally hold a professional qualification. Note: some modules require a specific professional qualification. See Selection Criteria for full requirements.

The Programme

  • Course Content

    This module will focus on identification of models of service delivery for people with intellectual disabilities and complex needs, legislation frameworks and the historical and contemporary context of intellectual disability care, contemporary models of care provision, co-designing and co-producing care delivery,  governance in service development and delivery, planning and evaluation of services and care, promoting quality and safety, ethical care delivery, values-based leadership in care delivery, multi-disciplinary and multi-agency team-working, critical appraisal of evidence relevant to intellectual disabilities service delivery and the principles of implementation science. 

    The module will draw on knowledge from the concepts of person centred care, equity and health inequalities, social inclusion and social justice and will reflect on key legislation and policy specific to the individual with intellectual disabilities across the lifespan.

  • Outcomes

    Where a clinical skills component is included, there may be a requirement for support and supervision of an experienced practitioner within the student’s clinical area.  

  • Delivery

    Students should note that delivery may be via blended learning, with a mix of online and face to face classes as detailed within the module timetable on Canvas.

    Spring (SPR) teaching commences w/c Monday, 12 January 2026 (Week 18) and finishes w/c 20 April 2026 unless otherwise advised.

  • Selection Criteria

    Applicants must hold at least a degree for entry to Level 7 (postgraduate level) study. Applicants who do not meet the entry requirements should contact the School for advice.

    International Trained Nurses/Midwives: If you hold an international qualification you will need to provide a UK ENIC Statement of Comparability. This should be obtained prior to submitting your application. You can apply for a statement through the ENIC website:  Statement of Comparability (enic.org.uk)    

    Students accessing this stand alone module must work in the relevant clinical area.

    Please note that these courses are not open to international applicants living outside the UK/ROI.
