Practice Rooms and instruments
Orchestral
The School offers free loan of unusual orchestral instruments to Music students requiring them for the University Orchestra. These include cor anglais, E flat and bass clarinets and double basses. The student leader of the University Orchestra is traditionally given loan of a fine 18th-century violin donated to the School by Professor Harrison.
The School has a range of brass instruments (Eb and Bb cornets, tenor horn, baritone and Eb bass) for the brass band.
Percussion
There is also an extensive collection of orchestral percussion, including four tam-tams,xylophone and marimba, as well as instruments more normally associated with jazz or Afro-Caribbean music, such as vibraphone, congas and hand-percussion. Music students wishing to play on original instruments have access to a full chest of viols plus a second bass viol, as well as a range of wind instruments including recorders, sackbut, cornetti and cornettini, serpent, crumhorn and natural horn. Students also have access to many non-Western musical instruments from Africa and the Far East. The University owns a Balinese gamelan which is in the care of the ethnomusicologists in the Department of Social Anthropology.

Keyboard
The school has the 8 practice rooms available for music students, all with pianos, 2 of the pianos are baby grands. There is an organ in the McMordie Hall and one in the Whitla Hall. The School also has an extensive range of early keyboard instruments.

Music Society members have exclusive access to Practice Room 10 which is available to book for individual instrumental practice or use of the piano.
(Please note; This is the only practice room available to students who are not studying one of the Music degree pathways.)
Situated in the Main Site Tower basement are a suite of four rooms - three performance and one control room for recording. All the rooms are linked together to allow studio quality audio recordings.
The practice rooms in MST are equipped with a standard backline of instruments and equipment for Ensemble Performance practice including: · PA system with Vocal microphones · Drum Kits · Guitar Amplifiers · Bass Amplifiers · Stage Pianos/Acoustic Pianos The practice rooms, in conjunction with the control room, can also be used as recording suite with multiple live rooms. Each room can be connected via Dante to the Focusrite RedNet System in the Control Room, providing up to 32 channels of audio recording. Please note that access to these rooms is exclusively for Music students.
