 Dr Andriana Margariti

Professor Andriana Margariti

School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences

Professor Margariti’s laboratory is pioneering the creation of human tissue models outside the body by harnessing cutting-edge induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) technologies. Through reprogramming cells from both healthy individuals and people living with diabetes and vascular complications, her team has developed powerful, patient-specific platforms that faithfully recapitulate human biology in a dish.

These advanced 3D models—including functional blood vessels and beating heart tissues—represent a transformative step forward in biomedical research. By recreating key components of the cardiovascular system using patient-derived cells, the lab provides an unprecedented opportunity to unravel the mechanisms driving endothelial dysfunction and diabetic heart disease. These models are not only biologically relevant but also remarkably versatile tools for testing new drugs, exploring personalised treatment responses, and accelerating the discovery of targeted, regenerative therapies.

Professor Margariti’s work is helping to redefine how we study disease and develop treatments—bringing the future of precision medicine into the lab today.
