Postgraduate Research
Postgraduate Research
The School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences promotes and supports postgraduate research in a wide range of subjects in human health and disease.
Postgraduate research students carry out independent research projects within one of the four internationally recognised Research Centres within the School: Patrick G Johnston Centre for Cancer Research, Wellcome-Wolfson Institute For Experimental Medicine and Public Health.
PhD opportunities may also be available in Medical Education. These Research Centres provide research opportunities across a wide range of medical and biomedical disciplines, including clinical and epidemiological studies, laboratory based science, bioinformatics and computational biology.
Students from each of the Research Centres have an excellent record in completion of degrees and placement in careers in University, Industry and Healthcare.

Characterisation of mechanisms of response and resistance in lower gastrointestinal cancers.
Lower GI cancers are increasing in incidence, especially in younger patients. Despite high response rates with non-operative treatments, there are a proportion of patients who have persistent or progressive disease. There is an urgent need to better understand mechanisms of resistance to treatment across the disease spectrum to enable upfront prediction of non-responders so that treatment can be intensified or adapted.

Using Molecular Biomarkers of Aging to Decode Health Inequalities
This research project aims to better understand why some people develop kidney disease as they age, and why others do not. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and diabetic kidney disease (DKD) are becoming more common, and CKD is expected to be one of the top five causes of death worldwide by 2040.
