Social Model for Health & Wellbeing in Primary & Community Care
Apply now Download brochureThis short course will provide students with a knowledge of the Social Model of Health, as a driver for change in health and social care including the introduction of community-based services such as Social Prescribing. Students will learn about community-based solutions for health and wellbeing and the reduction of health inequalities.
Students will learn how to evaluate health services, and will develop skills in low-intensity interventions, including Brief Motivational Interviewing.

Queen’s University Belfast are pleased to have developed in collaboration with Connected Community Care and the Graduate School at Queen’s University, short courses that can be taken as stand-alone modules or combined (60 CATS) to obtain a Certificate in Professional Development for Primary Health Care.
What modules are offered?

- Social Model for Health & Wellbeing in Primary & Community Care (20 CATS)
Fully - funded places are available for January 2024 entry via the Department for the Economy Skill Up Fund.

To be eligible for this programme, applicants must work in a primary care setting and have a primary degree or equivalent (read Selection Criteria for full requirements).

Course Content
This short course is designed for those who want to:
- Build on their strategic management and leadership skills;
- Focus on translating and implementing organisational strategy into effective operational performance;
- Access cutting edge project management and leadership thinking and knowledge;
- Learn coaching skills and techniques as part of their leadership toolkit;
- Learn about the social model of health and its role in community based services such as social prescribing'
This short course is supported by online learning resources and exercises to enable participants to reflect upon and review the implications of their learning for practice.

Outcomes
- This short course is assessed through a written assignment and includes a range of formative activities.
- In addition to obtaining a CMI Level 7 Certificate via the Strategic Management and Leadership course, all short courses can be taken on a stand-alone basis or combined to obtain a 60 CAT, QUB Certificate in Professional Development for Primary Health Care.

Delivery
8 sessions will be delivered at 2-5pm on Thursdays (via MS Teams) between 18th January and 2nd May 2024. Please note that while these dates will always be on a Thursday, the exact dates are subject to change in exceptional circumstances.
Sessions will be facilitated by subject experts from academic, public, community and voluntary sectors.

Selection Criteria
- To be eligible for this programme, applicants must work in a primary care setting and have a primary degree or equivalent.
- The minimum academic requirement is a Second-Class Honours degree from a UK or Republic of Ireland (ROI) Higher Education Provider or an equivalent qualification acceptable to the University.
- Recognition of prior experiential learning (RPEL) is permitted.
It is open to applicants resident in Northern Ireland only. It is not open to applicants from outside Northern Ireland.
In order to apply, the candidate must be:- over 18 years of age;
- eligible to work in Northern Ireland;
- settled in Northern Ireland, and has been ordinarily resident in the UK for at least three years;
- or is a person who has indefinite leave to enter or remain in the UK
