MDBS MICROSCOPE MEDICAL STUDENTS PATIENTS BODY BEQUEST
Body Bequest
Medical Education & Research

Since its establishment in the nineteenth century, Anatomy at Queen’s University Belfast has accepted human bodies for use in medical education and research. Within Northern Ireland, Queen’s University Medical School is the sole recipient of body donations.

More Information

Anatomical examination of the body by medical students and other future health professionals is an essential ingredient to their training. Thus the decision by an individual to bequest his/her body to medical science is important not only in helping student understanding but also in advancing anatomical knowledge.

The present Body Bequest Scheme operates in accordance with the provisions of the Human Tissue Act (2004) and all aspects of the Bequest Scheme and the practice of Anatomy are regulated by the Human Tissue Authority (HTA) http://www.hta.gov.uk/

The HTA issues licences for the premises in which anatomical work is performed and delegates authority to trained Designated Individuals to ensure that suitable practices are used in undertaking the licensed activity, that the other persons who work under the licence are suitable and that the conditions of the licence are complied with.  The licensed premises can be visited by the HTA at any time in order to inspect the human bodies, anatomical specimens, equipment and records.

Within Northern Ireland, Queen’s University Medical School is the sole recipient of body donations.  We feel that it is important to provide as much information as possible to potential donors.  For further information please contact:

Centre for Biomedical Sciences Education (Anatomy Office)
Telephone:  (028) 9097 2131 or email: anatomy@qub.ac.uk

(please include name and full address)

or by writing to:

For further information with regard to Body Donation please refer to the Body Donation Bequest Booklet

Queen’s University can only consider donations from people resident in Northern Ireland.  Potential donors resident outside of Northern Ireland should contact the HTA for details of local Medical Schools in the UK.
