Dr Karl Butterworth receives prestige Michael Fry Research Award

30 May, 2019

Congratulations to Dr Karl Butterworth from The Patrick G Johnston Centre for Cancer Research has won a highly prestigious international award from the Radiation Research Society in the United States.

The Michael Fry Research Award is given to recognize a junior scientist who has made extraordinary contributions to the field of radiation research and Karl will be presented with the award at the annual meeting of the Radiation Research Society in San Diego later this year.

He beat intense international competition to become the 46th recipient of the prize regarded as the top international award in Radiation Research which is rarely awarded to investigators outside of the USA.

He is the first recipient of the award from Northern Ireland and only the third recipient from the UK.

The award is given in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to the field of radiation research.

He is a translational radiation biologist whose recent work focusses on exploiting opportunities for biological optimisation in radiotherapy using combination treatments and understanding the basis of normal tissue injury.

Delighted with the achievement Dr Karl Butterworth explains, ‘I am extremely honoured to receive this prestigious international award from the Radiation Research Society. To be placed in such distinguished ranks is a huge privilege and clearly highlights our achievements and ambition within The Patrick G Johnston Centre for Cancer Research to deliver internationally recognised radiation research’.
