Together our researchers are having a global impact on society. They are advancing and expanding knowledge, helping to define attitudes to some of the great social issues of our time – such as human embryology, gender and cancer.
IMMUNOBIOLOGY AND MICROBES
Battling to boost our defences and repair damage

Our researchers investigate what drives tissue damage and repair in immune-related diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS). We lead world-class research around microbes resistant to antibiotics. We investigate lung infections associated with a range of illnesses.

VISUAL AND VASCULAR DISEASES
NEW VISION IN RESEARCH

Internationally-renowned experts in blood vessel biology, engaging in translational research to improve the lives of patients with cardiovascular and eye diseases. Our work continues to have an important impact in the fight against conditions such as age-related macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in the elderly, as well as heart disease and diabetic complications.

RESPIRATORY DISEASES
CREATING NEW HOPE FOR PATIENTS

Focusing on the processes that lead to common lung illnesses, such as acute respiratory distress syndrome, cystic fibrosis and asthma. Working with clinical partners, our work is driven by the needs of patients and the goal of translating discovery into new and improved treatments and care.

Dr Ruth Hunter
Let's Get Physical

Dr Ruth Hunter is passionate about exercise and physical activity. She is Project Manager of the PARC Study, helping to promote physical activity and lifestyle changes for people living within a major Belfast regeneration project. The study has been developed through the Centre for Public Health and the UKCRC Centre of Excellence for Public Health

Professor Augusto Azuara-Blanco is on a mission to improve the lives of patients with glaucoma – the second most common cause of blindness in the western world and the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide.
