Short Course Training Options

Queen’s University Belfast are pleased to have developed in collaboration with the Connected Community Care and the Graduate School at Queen’s University, three short courses that can be taken as stand-alone modules or combined (60 CATS) to obtain a Certificate in Professional Development for Primary Health Care.

 What modules are offered?

  • Strategic Management & Leadership in Primary Care (40 CATS)
  • Coaching Skills for Leaders (20 CATS)
  • Social Model for Health & Wellbeing in Primary & Community Care (20 CATS)

Who are these courses designed for?

To be eligible for this programme, applicants must work in a primary care setting and have a primary degree or equivalent.

These short courses are designed for those who want to:

  • Build on their strategic management and leadership skills;
  • Focus on translating and implementing organisational strategy into effective operational performance;
  • Access cutting edge project management and leadership thinking and knowledge;
  • Learn coaching skills and techniques as part of their leadership toolkit;
  • Learn about the social model of health and its role in community based services such as social prescribing' 

Eligibility requirements

  • The minimum academic requirement is a Second-Class Honours degree from a UK or Republic of Ireland (ROI) Higher Education Provider or an equivalent qualification acceptable to the University.
  • Recognition of prior experiential learning (RPEL) is permitted.

Module Options

Strategic Management & Leadership in Primary Care  (40 CATS)

The Strategic Management and Leadership short course offers skills enhancement and formal accreditation of leadership and management skills to Primary Care practitioners at postgraduate level.

This short course consists of two units; Strategic Leadership and Strategic Management Project and is accredited through the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) for a Level 7 Certificate.

  • Accreditation and Assessment

    The short course in Strategic Management & Leadership in Primary Care is accredited by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) through the Graduate School at Queen’s University.

    This short course includes 2 CMI units: Strategic Leadership and Strategic Management Project. Each unit is formally assessed through a written report.

    In addition to obtaining a CMI Level 7 Certificate via the Strategic Management and Leadership course, all short courses can be taken on a stand-alone basis or combined to obtain a 60 CAT, QUB Certificate in Professional Development for Primary Health Care.

    Module/Delivery times:  09.30 – 15.30 each day

    Tutor Led Delivery – Each unit consists of 5-6 workshops delivered by experienced trainers via Microsoft Teams. There may be some face-to-face learning which will be reviewed later in the year.

    Online Learning Resources – Each unit is supported with online learning resources, practical guides, and reflective exercises, to enable participants to build on their learning and apply it within their own context and complete the assessment.  

    Minimum Numbers – This course will run subject to a minimum of 15 students successfully applying.

     

Coaching Skills for Leaders (20 CATS)

The Coaching short course provides participants with an understanding of the benefits, types and application of coaching used by strategic leaders and introduces coaching tools, techniques and approaches.

It also gives participants the opportunity to practice and enhance their coaching skills.

  • Accreditation and Assessment

    The Coaching short course is assessed through 2 assessment tasks, a written report based on coaching practice with 1-2 coachees and a recorded presentation based on a reflective account of the coaching practice. 

    In addition to obtaining a CMI Level 7 Certificate via the Strategic Management and Leadership course, all short courses can be taken on a stand-alone basis or combined to obtain a 60 CAT, QUB Certificate in Professional Development for Primary Health Care.

    Module/Delivery times:  09.30 – 15.30 pm each day

    Tutor Led Delivery – Each unit consists of 4-5 workshops delivered by experienced trainers via Microsoft Teams. There may be some face-to-face learning which will be reviewed later in the year

    Online Learning Resources – This short course is supported with online learning resources, practical guides, and reflective exercises, to enable participants to build on their learning and apply it within their own context.

    Coaching Practice –There is an expectation that students will complete up to 8 hours coaching practice with 1 or 2 coachees.

    Minimum Numbers – This course will run subject to a minimum of 10 students successfully applying.

     

Social Model for Health & Wellbeing in Primary & Community Care (20 CATS)

This short course will provide students with a knowledge of the Social Model of Health, as a driver for change in health and social care including the introduction of community-based services such as Social Prescribing. Students will learn about community-based solutions for health and wellbeing and the reduction of health inequalities.

Students will learn how to evaluate health services, and will develop skills in low-intensity interventions, including Brief Motivational Interviewing.

  • Accreditation and Assessment

    This short course is assessed through a written assignment and includes a range of formative activities.

    In addition to obtaining a CMI Level 7 Certificate via the Strategic Management and Leadership course, all short courses can be taken on a stand-alone basis or combined to obtain a 60 CAT, QUB Certificate in Professional Development for Primary Health Care.

    Module/Delivery times: Module / delivery times: 8 sessions will be delivered at 2-5pm on Thursdays between 5th October and 21st December 2023 (exact dates TBC) 

    Tutor Led Delivery – Sessions will be facilitated by subject experts from academic, public, community and voluntary sectors, via Microsoft Teams. 

    Online Learning Resources –This short course is supported by online learning resources and exercises to enable participants to reflect upon and review the implications of their learning for practice.

    Minimum Numbers – This course will run subject to a minimum of 10 students successfully applying.

There may be full or part funding available for these short courses. An update on any possible funding will be provided imminently.
