Strategic Management & Leadership in Primary Care - APPLICATIONS CLOSED

The Strategic Management and Leadership Module is designed to equip primary care practitioners with advanced leadership and management skills.

Fully-funded places are available via the Department for the Economy Skill Up Fund.

The module is divided into two units: Strategic Leadership and Strategic Management Project. Participants will not only build on their strategic management and leadership capabilities but also focus on translating and implementing organisational strategies into effective operational performance. This module prepares participants to become future leaders in the healthcare sector and also enables them to plan, lead, and execute a strategic project directly connected to their professional role.

Additionally, this module is also accredited through the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), and graduates will receive a CMI Level 7 Certificate in Strategic Management and Leadership Practice.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for this programme, applicants must work in a primary care setting and have a primary degree or equivalent (read Selection Criteria for full requirements).

The Programme

  • Course Content

    This short course is designed for those who want to:

    • Build on their strategic management and leadership skills;
    • Focus on translating and implementing organisational strategy into effective operational performance;
    • Access cutting edge project management and leadership thinking and knowledge.

    Each unit is supported with online learning resources, practical guides, and reflective exercises, to enable participants to build on their learning and apply it within their own context and complete the assessment.  

  • Outcomes
    • The course is assessed through two assessment reports, one for each unit.  Formative assessment activities also take place including the requirement to plan, lead, and implement a Strategic Project connected to the learner's professional role. 
    • In addition to obtaining a CMI Level 7 Certificate via the Strategic Management and Leadership course, all short courses can be taken on a stand-alone basis or combined to obtain a 60 CAT, QUB Certificate in Professional Development for Primary Health Care. 
  • Delivery

    Each unit consists of 5-6 workshops delivered by experienced trainers via Microsoft Teams.  The first day of each unit is in person and the remaining days are via Microsoft Teams.

    Strategic Leadership Unit

    • Induction - 21st January 2025
    • Day 1 - 4th February 2025
    • Day 2 - 18th February 2025
    • Day 3 - 4th March 2025
    • Day 4 - 18th March 2025
    • Day 5 - 25th March 2025

    Strategic Management Project Unit

    • Day 1 - 15th April 2025
    • Day 2 - 29th April 2025
    • Day 3 - 13th May 2025
    • Day 4 - 27th May 2025
    • Day 5 - 10th June 2025

    This course will run subject to a minimum of 10 students successfully applying.

  • Selection Criteria
    • To be eligible for this programme, applicants must work in a primary care setting and have a primary degree or equivalent.
    • The minimum academic requirement is a Second-Class Honours degree from a UK or Republic of Ireland (ROI) Higher Education Provider or an equivalent qualification acceptable to the University.
    • Recognition of prior experiential learning (RPEL) is permitted.

    The Department for the Economy Skill Up Fund is open to applicants resident in Northern Ireland only. It is not open to applicants from outside Northern Ireland.

    To be eligible for a fully funded place under this programme you must:

    • over 18 years of age;
    • eligible to work in Northern Ireland;
    • settled in Northern Ireland, and has been ordinarily resident in the UK for at least three years;
    • or is a person who has indefinite leave to enter or remain in the UK
    • Must meet the existing entry requirements for the course. 

    Applicants should indicate on the application form if they want to be considered for DfE funding.  

    Due to high demand you are advised to apply as early as possible.

    We may be able to consider self-funded or employer funded applicants on a case by case basis, as capacity on the individual PGCert programmes allow. Please indicate in your application if you wish to be considered as a self-funded or employer funded applicant.

Several options will be displayed in the DAP and you should choose those listed below.  Please note you will not be able to choose Strategic Management & Leadership in Primary Care at this point:

  • Choose Career – Postgraduate Taught
  • Choose School/Institute – Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences
  • Choose Degree – Medicine, Dentistry & Biomedical Sciences (Institutional Credit – Postgraduate Taught)
  • Click – Continue button

Applicants should note:  

  1. It is essential that applicants complete the form fully leaving no sections blank, particularly within the sections requesting information about qualifications and employment history.
  2. All relevant qualifications including Undergraduate Degrees, Masters, and/ or any others which may be at an equivalent level. Please ensure that copies/photos of these are uploaded to the Direct Application Portal (DAP) as proof.

You also need to include specific text and information in the Additional Information box

  1. This should include the title of the short course (module) you are applying for:  Strategic Management & Leadership in Primary Care.
  2. The reasons for wanting to undertake the course and how your work experience fits within the criteria of the course.
  3. Confirmation that you can fully commit to the time required to undertake the course.

Applicants should indicate on the application form if they want to be considered for DfE funding.

Please note, you are not required to apply for the funding separately, as this is secured by accepting a place on the programme.
