Postdoc Parents Network
What is the Postdoc Parents Network?
Established in 2025 by the Postdoctoral Development Centre (PDC), the Postdoc Parents Network is a peer-led community designed to support and connect postdoctoral researchers at Queen’s University Belfast who are also parents or caregivers. While the network receives administrative support from the PDC, it is shaped by its members to ensure that activities and initiatives reflect their lived experiences and needs.
The network currently focuses on creating space for shared experience, informal support, resource sharing and social connection.
Visit the sections below to find out more about the Network.
-
Who is the Network for?
The Network is open, inclusive and welcoming. While its activities are primarily designed for postdoctoral researchers who are parents, we also warmly welcome research staff who are expecting a baby, those considering starting a family in the future and research staff with other caring responsibilities.
We recognise and value the diversity of families, caregiving roles, and personal circumstances. Everyone’s experience is valid, and all are welcome.
*We also understand that postgraduate research (PGR) students who are parents may face similar challenges, and we plan to open our larger events to the PGR community where possible.
- What does the Network offer?
The format of events and initiatives will evolve based on what members find most useful. These might include:
- Informal coffee catchups (online or in-person)
- Peer discussion groups (e.g. on flexible working, parental leave, childcare and work-life balance)
- Guest speakers and panel events
- Resource sharing and signposting
- The formation of thematic subgroups (e.g. parents of under-5s, parents of teenagers etc.)
- Positive story sharing—showcasing the good as well as the challenging sides of parenting in academia
As the network develops, members may also wish to consider whether the Network could play a role in raising awareness, highlighting challenges, or identifying opportunities to improve the experience of parents in academia.
- How can I get involved?
If you’d like to join the Postdoc Parents Network, contact the Postdoctoral Development Centre at pdc@qub.ac.uk.
There are lots of opportunities which include:
- Joining the Microsoft Teams Channel to connect with others
- Coming along to an event - even just for a quick coffee
- Contributing ideas for the kinds of support you'd like to see
- Volunteering as a Network Champion to help guide the Network's future
- What is a Network Champion?
Network Champions are members who take on a more active role in shaping the direction and activities of the Network. This is a flexible, low-commitment opportunity to ensure the Network continues to reflect the needs and experiences of its members.
Champions might:
- Attend occasional, short planning meetings (e.g. once or twice a year)
- Suggest or help plan events, resources or initiatives
- Gather feedback from other members
- Take part in discussions about the Network’s future direction
Formal experience or lots of time is not required to be a champion. You only need to have a willingness to support your community.
If you’re interested or would like to know more about becoming a champion, contact Lisa at l.douglas@qub.ac.uk.
- Looking Ahead: What’s Next for the Network?
As a new and evolving initiative, the future of the Postdoc Parents Network will be shaped by its members.
Some early priorities and possibilities include:
- Establishing a group of Network Champions
- Planning events that build connection and community
- Developing resources, visibility and momentum
- Deciding together whether the network should focus solely on peer support or also engage in advocacy
This list will evolve as we learn more from members. If you have suggestions or want to help shape the network’s future, we’d love to hear from you.

On a sunny afternoon in late April, a group of postdoctoral researchers gathered in the Canada Room and Council Chamber at Queen’s University Belfast to mark the launch of the Postdoc Parents Network.
