Overview

This event has been organised by the PDC Representatives' Network as part of a series of live online podcast recordings. In this career insights session, our Rep committee member, Professor Gerd Wagner will be joined by guests, Dr Elaine O'Reilly, University College Dublin and Dr Delphine Wagner, Kinesys Consulting.

Both guests will be interviewed by Gerd, who will ask them questions about their roles, careers, experience of working in and out of academia and tips for postdocs and PhD candidates who are planning their careers etc.

The conversations will be recorded with the intention of converting them to episodes of the PDC's podcast, "The theory of the postdoc evolution".

We advise interested parties to attend the recording live in the event that any technical issues arise that may prevent us from using the recording. Attendees will be able to see our guests and use the chat function to suggest questions.

ALL WELCOME!

This recording is open to anyone who is interested in attending, including those external to Queen's University Belfast, postdocs and PhD candidates!

Our Guests

Dr Elaine O'Reilly

Associate Professor of Chemical Biology
University College Dublin

Dr Elaine O'Reilly was born and raised in Dublin and completed her degree in chemistry at University College Dublin (UCD) in 2006. She remained at UCD for her PhD studies under the direction of Prof. Francesca Paradisi, before moving to The University of Manchester to carry out postdoctoral research with Prof. Nicholas Turner and Prof. Sabine Flitsch.

In 2014, Elaine began her independent research career at Manchester Metropolitan University before moving to The University of Nottingham as Assistant Professor of Chemical Biology in 2015. In January 2019, she moved to her current position as Associate Professor of Chemical Biology at University College Dublin.

Elaine's research focuses on the development of novel enzymes and methodologies that enable entirely new biocatalytic disconnections, and her group focus on overcoming the challenges that hamper the widespread application biocatalysts. In 2017, her group’s research was recognised by the award of the RSC Harrison-Meldola Memorial Prize.

Elaine lives in Dublin with her two young children, Harry and Molly.

Dr Delphine Wagner

Before joining Kinesys, Delphine spent 10 years at the biopharmaceutical company Amgen. At Amgen, she worked in a number of roles in Global Regulatory Affairs, including regulatory product lead in Europe, as well as in Emerging Markets. Her focus at Amgen was primarily the development and implementation of regulatory strategies, including life-cycle management for biologics in both the oncology and non-oncology therapeutic areas. She also supported global clinical programmes.

Delphine holds a PhD in Medicinal Chemistry from the University of Bath and has held post-doctoral research positions at Sanofi-Aventis and at the University of Oxford. She received her chemistry education in France and moved to the UK in 2000. Delphine worked briefly in a patent attorney practice and has a special interest in IP-related matters as well as in antibiotics research.
