Professor Vicky Cowling
Senior Group Leader, Cancer Research UK Scotland Institute

About the Speaker:
Prof Vicky Cowling is a senior group leader at the Cancer Research UK Scotland Institute in Glasgow (formerly Beatson Institute).  Her group investigates how regulation of the RNA cap impacts on gene expression and cell functions. The Cowling lab discovered that formation of the RNA cap is regulated by cellular signalling pathways, resulting in changes in RNA expression, processing and translation. Previously, Prof Cowling spent 15 years at University of Dundee and was Deputy Head of the Centre for Gene Regulation and Expression. She undertook postdoctoral studies at Dartmouth College and Princeton University in the US. Prof Cowling has been awarded prestigious Fellowships and funding for her research from the Medical Research Council, European Research Council and the Wellcome Trust. Her research has been recognized by external organisations including a Lister Prize Fellowship, an EMBO Young Investigator Award, a British Society of Cell Biology Women in Cell Biology Award, a Wolfson Merit Award and a Fellowship of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (2019).
