When do I sign the Tenancy Agreement?
Once you’ve accepted your offer, we’ll send you your tenancy agreement. Please take time to review it carefully, sign it, and return it at your earliest convenience.
- How do I pay my rent?
Rent is due before arrival and then on the 1st of each subsequent month. Rent can be paid by one of the following methods:
- Salary deduction. Payment is taken directly from your salary or stipend at the end of each month for the following month’s rent*.
e.g. payment on 31 July for rent due on 1 August
You must complete a form in order to arrange this payment and the form will be available when you check-in, or email residentialfees@qub.ac.uk to request one at any stage.
Depending on the date your form is returned to us, you may need to pay the first month’s rent at the Accommodation reception in person until the salary deduction system becomes active. We will advise you of this when you return your form. - Bank Transfer.

- By card at reception.
- In full on arrival. If your stay is for 3 months or less, the payment is required in full on arrival.
- Salary deduction. Payment is taken directly from your salary or stipend at the end of each month for the following month’s rent*.
- How long can I stay in staff accommodation?
The maximum stay permitted in staff accommodation is 12 months (and the minimum stay is 3 months).
- Do I have internet access?
Internet service is available in all Queen's Staff and Family accommodation.
- Is there a television provided?
A TV is not provided in all properties; if you do install a TV you will also need to purchase a TV licence.

Do I need to buy a television licence?
By law in the UK you are required to obtain a television licence if you wish to watch live TV on a television, computer of tablet. Information relating to television licences can be obtained at www.tvlicensing.co.uk
- Do I pay for electricity?
Your apartment has a ‘pay as you go meter’ and the top-up procedure will be explained on arrival. For apartments in Stratfield House, you’ll need to set up an account with Power NI. You can find guidance on how to do this in your arrival pack.

- Can I bring a pet with me?
We do not allow pets in our accommodation.
- Is bed linen provided?
A set of bed linen and a towel will be provided in staff accommodation to help you settle in.

How does my Gas Payeasy Meter work?
Your apartment has a ‘pay as you go meter’ and guidance on how to use this will be found in the arrival pack. For helpful information and instructions for the PAYEASY Gas meter such as, how to transfer credit to your meter and using your credit reserve, please click HERE.
Please note that apartment at 34a Windsor Park are equipped with electric meters only – heating is provided via electricity rather than gas.
- Is a cleaning service available?
We provide a cleaning service of all communal areas on a weekly basis. However, it is the tenant’s responsibility to maintain the cleanliness of their apartment during their stay.
If you require a cleaning service for your apartment, please email staffaccommodation@qub.ac.uk; this is an additional charge, which will be added to your account.

How can I get to Queen's Accommodation?
Arriving by Air
Northern Ireland is served by flights into Belfast International Airport, George Best Belfast City Airport and City of Derry Airport. Scheduled air services operate from all major UK airports. There are many direct flights from major European cities. Major airlines operate scheduled services from the US and Canada to Belfast International Airport via UK and Republic of Ireland airports. Additionally, there are charter flights direct from New York and Toronto to Belfast.
Travelling by Ferry
Northern Ireland has first-class ferry connections, making the car ferry a very attractive way to go.

Port information can also be obtained from the Port of Larne and Belfast Harbour. - What are the public transport links?
It couldn't be easier to visit the great attractions and places of interest Belfast has to offer and with a Metro Day Ticket you can really make the most of Belfast.
You can buy your Metro Day Ticket from the driver on the bus, at ticket vending machines, online, on the mLink ticketing app, or at the Visit Belfast Welcome Centre, Donegall Place.

https://www.translink.co.uk/Taxis are an easy to book and find in Belfast and can be a convenient but expensive transport option. Two of the main local taxi companies are ValueCabs and FonaCab. You can book online, by phone or by downloading and booking on the app.
It is also possible to use Uber in Belfast. You will need to have an Uber account to book an Uber taxi. Click here for more information on Uber.
Taxi fares are metered and rates depend on the day and the time. Long waiting times may incur an additional charge. Most taxis accept payment by card.

Health Care in Northern Ireland
You are encouraged to register with a Doctor (GP) as soon as possible. On site at Queen’s it is possible to register with the University Health Centre GP (local Doctor) Service. The University Health Centre is based Elmwood Manse, 7 University Terrace, BT7 1NP and is a one-minute walk from the One Elmwood Student Centre. The University Health Centre does not accept registrations on Mondays.
Registrations are accepted from the following catchment areas: BT1, BT2, BT3, BT4, BT5, BT6, BT7, BT8, BT9, BT10, BT11, BT12 and BT17.
It is however possible to register with an alternative GP practice, and you can search for an alternative GP Practice here
The University Health Centre require processing time for all registrations. If you are an international student, you are encouraged to register as soon as possible after your arrival. You will require a letter from the Student Information Point in One Elmwood to do this and can get this as part of your enrolment at Queen’s.

Medication - If you take regular medication, supplying a medical history from your previous Doctor can help the Health Centre with your medication prescription requirements during your time in Belfast. Consider securing this information before departure and bringing it with you.
Emergency Medical Care
If you require urgent or emergency treatment you are advised to dial 999 (free from any public or private telephone) and ask for the ambulance service or go to a hospital emergency department. Emergency departments are also known as Accident and Emergency (A and E) or casualty departments.
In Belfast Emergency Departments are located at:

For emergency medical attention, phone 999 and ask for an Ambulance. The closest Accident and Emergency hospital to Queen’s University is the Royal Victoria Hospital.
- How do I open a bank account?
As a new customer with a UK bank or building society you will be required to select which bank or building society you wish to bank with. Normally you will be required to make an appointment with the bank and provide proof of identity and current address.
We will be able to provide a proof of residency letter once you’ve completed your check-in with us.

How can I register my child with a local school?
Search Schools | Education Authority Northern Ireland (eani.org.uk) to view schools in the University area. If you have a child above day care age, state education is free, and you are expected to enrol your child preferably in a school nearest to you.

Belfast Welcome Centre

The Welcome Centre is a great first stop for visitors to Belfast. It provides information on all the tourist attractions and places of interest in Belfast and Northern Ireland. It also houses a gift shop with lots of locally produced gifts and souvenirs.
Botanic Gardens
Located next to Queen's University, Botanic Gardens are an important part of Belfast's Victorian heritage and a popular meeting place for residents, students and tourists.
It contains two important buildings, the Palm House and the Tropical Ravine, as well as a children's playground, a bowling green, walking routes, a rose garden and assorted tropical plants, mature trees and flower beds. The park is often used for events, as well as band recitals, concerts and opera performances.
Ulster Museum
Come face to face with dinosaurs, meet an Egyptian Mummy and see modern masterpieces with a visit to the Ulster Museum which is located inside Botanic Gardens. As Northern Ireland’s treasure house of the past and present, the museum is home to a rich collection of art, history and natural sciences and free to all visitors. From Ireland to the South Pacific, ancient relics to hands on activities, the museum offers something for everyone from the simply curious to the enthusiast.

Queen's University Welcome Centre and Naughton Gallery
The Welcome Centre is located in the Lanyon Building at Queen's University. Recently refurbished it hosts a regular programme of exhibitions and serves as an information point for visitors and tourists, as well as offering a varied selection of souvenirs and gifts.
The Naughton Gallery is also located in the Lanyon Building. The gallery hosts a rolling programme of works from the University's own collection, touring exhibitions and shows by local and international artists.

Titanic Belfast
Located in the heart of Belfast, right beside the historic site of this world-famous ship's construction, Titanic Belfast is the World's Largest Titanic Visitor Experience. Housed in an iconic, 6-floor building, this state-of-the-art visitor experience tells the story of the Titanic, from her conception in Belfast in the early 1900s, through her construction and launch, to her famous maiden voyage and subsequent place in History.

The MAC
The Metropolitan Arts Centre, or The MAC houses 2 theatres, 3 art galleries, various rehearsal/dance spaces as well as a cafe and bar. It is in St Anne's Square, in Belfast's Cathedral Quarter, which is within walking distance of Belfast City Centre and various bars, cafes and restaurants.
