Erin McGrattan
"I feel overwhelmed that I would even be considered for this recognition, but it’s an honour and a testament to my fantastic academic mentors, support from my funders. I also see it as a recognition of the work I am involved in and the great team I work alongside."
As the Brian Conlon PhD Scholar in Cancer Epidemiology, Erin McGrattan is contributing to vital research that shapes the future of public health and cancer prevention. A graduate of the Food Quality, Safety and Nutrition programme (Class of 2021), Erin combines academic excellence with elite athletic discipline as an Ulster Champion Camogie Player. Her time at Queen’s University Belfast was marked by rigorous study, teamwork, and resilience.
"I am a PhD Scholar supported by the Brian Conlon Foundation. Brian was a Queen's graduate, like me. He was a very successful businessperson and founded the renowned First Derivatives. Brian tragically died in 2019 after being diagnosed with oesophageal cancer, but thanks to the support of the Foundation formed in Brian's name, I am now working with colleagues at the Centre for Public Health within the Cancer Epidemiology group focusing on oesophageal cancer.
Now leading research that impacts lives and communities across Northern Ireland and beyond, Erin remains driven by a commitment to health equity and scientific innovation. She continues to draw inspiration from the strong academic foundations, mentorship, and camaraderie fostered at Queen’s.
"This is what Queen's is all about. Coming together as a community. Supporting each other, even in the face of adversity, to find ways to help others."
